YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its 2013 All-CAC Women's Tennis Team Thursday and Salisbury University had six players honored for their play this season, led by freshman Natalie Savage, who was awarded the CAC Rookie of the Year.
Savage recorded a superb freshman campaign in 2013, going 18-2 in singles play, including a 9-1 mark at the No. 1 flight. She had a 18-match win streak halted in the CAC championship against the University of Mary Washington this past Saturday. She was also a combined 19-2 at No. 1 doubles with senior Jillian Poppe and sophomore Roxanne Alban, and held a 19-match win streak at that position as well. Savage also earned second-team honors at No. 1 singles and doubles.
Joining her as second-team honorees is the remainder of the Sea Gulls' lineup at the end of the season: senior Elaina Iosue, at No. 2 singles and doubles, Alban, at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles, sophomore Katie Youlios at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles, senior Victoria Handlin at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, and junior Jessica Babyak at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Iosue finished her senior campaign with a record of 15-5 in singles, including an 8-2 record at No. 2. In doubles, Iosue went 16-4 with matching 8-2 records with both Alban and Youlios as partners. She has been selected as a second-team honoree in doubles for the last two seasons and was first team in singles in 2011 and 2012.
Alban went 14-6 in singles on the season, including a 6-4 mark at No. 3 and a 6-2 mark at No. 4. In doubles, she finished a combined 17-3, partnering with Savage at No. 1 and Iosue at No. 2 throughout the year. She was a first-team selection in singles last season and a second-team pick in doubles.
Youlios had a stellar season, recording a 16-4 mark in singles, going 9-1 at No. 4. She had a 16-match winning streak. In doubles, she went 17-5 with three different partners during the year at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. She also earned second-team recognition in both singles and doubles last season.
Handlin finished her Salisbury career with an impressive senior campaign attaining a 16-4 overall record in singles play, 8-2 at No. 5. In doubles, she went a combined 10-2, playing with two different partners, mainly at No. 3 doubles. She earned first-team honors in singles last season and second team in doubles for her sophomore and junior years.
Babyak is a first-time recipient of All-CAC honors at both No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. She went 8-2 in singles play, 5-2 at No. 6. In doubles, she had a spotless 9-0 record with Youlios at No. 3 before partnering with Handlin, earning an 8-2 mark later in the season.
The Sea Gulls finished the 2013 season with a 20-3 record. The season was highlighted by a program-best 20-match win streak and the 20 wins are also the most in program history.
