SALISBURY, Md. -- The Salisbury University women's tennis team captured its first Capital Athletic Conference victory, 8-1, over York College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls, ranked No. 16 in the Atlantic South Region, soared to a fast start in doubles as the No. 1 doubles pair of senior Jillian Poppe and freshman Natalie Savage, ranked No. 4 in the Atlantic South region, needed little time in defeating Dea Vlahos and Megan McCullin, 8-1.
Sophomore Allison Lutz and senior Victoria Handlin earned a victory at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, over Emily Skutnik and Megan Jones, and the Sea Gull pair of sophomore Katie Youlios and junior Jessica Babyak rolled 8-0 at No. 2 over Nikki Olsen and Emily Price in dominating fashion, completing the doubles sweep.
Savage rolled at No. 1 singles, taking the first set at love, and dropping only two games in the second set on her way to victory over Vlahos. Senior Elaina Iosue also shined at No. 2, losing only two games on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Sophomore Sam Babo won her debut at No. 5 singles, dropping Skutnik in a tough match, 3-6, 6-3, and 10-1 in the third set super tie-breaker.
Lutz and Babyak both added to the maroon and gold's cause, dropping only three combined games at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
York (2-7, 0-1 CAC) won its only match of the day at No. 6 singles as Megan Jones outlasted Salisbury junior Charlotte Urian 6-2, 6-3.
The Sea Gulls (4-2, 1-1 CAC) will look to build on their four-match winning streak this coming Monday, March 18 when they will travel to Texas and battle North Central Texas College. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
