Men's tennis snaps two-match skid with 6-3 win at Elizabethtown, women fall by same score

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team snapped a two-match skid on Sunday afternoon, defeating Elizabethtown College, 6-3. The women suffered their second straight loss, falling by the same score to the Blue Jays.

The men (9-9) opened up a 2-1 lead through the doubles matches as senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 singles while the No. 3 duo of senior Curtis Quandt and freshman Nick Mancuso collected an 8-6 win.

Albers, senior Justin Smith and sophomore Demetri Vrahnos each collected straight-set singles wins. Albers won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, Smith won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 and Vrahnos was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 6. Mancuso earned Salisbury's sixth win with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4.

The Salisbury women (9-9) collected all three wins at the top of the lineup with junior Jillian Poppe and freshman Roxanne Alban taking an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and the Gulls headed to singles play down, 2-1.

Poppe and classmate Elaina Iosue accounted for the Gulls' two singles wins with Poppe claiming a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 and Iosue taking a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2.

Freshman Allison Lutz played a three-set match at No. 5, taking the first set 6-3, before falling in the next two, 6-3 and 6-4. Alban took a narrow loss at No. 3 singles, falling 6-3, 7-5.

The teams will play their fourth consecutive road match on Thursday, April 19, traveling to Washington (Md.) College. The matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
