Women's tennis blanks Hope International to close out California trip

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team closed out its annual spring break trip to California with a 9-0 win at Hope International University on Thursday.

The Sea Gulls (3-6) opened the match with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles from the duo of junior Jillian Poppe and Roxanne Alban. The lead grew quickly to 2-0 with junior Victoria Handlin and freshman Katie Youlios pairing to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.

The closest match of the day came at No. 2 doubles with junior Elaina Iosue and freshman Allison Lutz working to pull out a 9-7 win, allowing the Gulls to sweep the first three matches against Hope (1-12).

Lutz and Youlios officially put the match away with 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively, giving Salisbury the win.

The remaining four singles matches went the Gulls' way, with the closest being a 6-3, 6-2 win by Alban at No. 3.

The team will return to action on Tuesday, March 27, as the Sea Gulls travel to York (Pa.) College. That match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
