SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team picked up an 8-1 non-conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon at the SU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Sea Gulls (6-1) started the day by sweeping doubles. Sophomore Jillian Poppe and senior Angela Tenaglia finished off their opponents at No. 1 doubles first, 8-1, followed by sophomore Rachel Lupinetti and freshman Jessica Babyak at No. 3 doubles, 8-2. The comeback of the day came at No. 2 doubles where sophomores Elaina Iosue and Victoria Handlin battled back twice. The pair came back from 4-0 down and 7-4 down, winning the final five games of the match for a 9-7 victory.
Salisbury took five of the six singles matches, winning all five in straight sets. Poppe allowed her opponent just one game in her No. 1 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-0, while Lupinetti was nearly as impressive at No. 6 winning 6-0, 6-2.
Handlin pulled out a narrow first set win at No. 4 singles, 7-5, before slamming the door on her opponent, 6-0, in the second set.
Salisbury's final win of the day came at No. 5 singles from Babyak, who collected a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory to close out Salisbury's third-straight win.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Saturday, April 2, as they are scheduled to host the University of Mary Washington beginning at 1 p.m.
