Sea Gulls topple Swarthmore in first home match, 8-1

The Salisbury University women’s tennis team got its second victory of the season Thursday as it defeated Swarthmore College, 8-1, in the first home match of the year.

The No. 1 doubles team of senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) and freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) defeated its opponent 9-7 in a match that went back and forth all day. The win was Burr's 50th career doubles victory. Seniors Kelly Fahrner (Germantown, Md.) and Rachel Iosue (Damascus, Md.) squeezed by their Swarthmore counterparts, 8-6. The victory by freshman Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md.) and junior Angela Tenaglia's (Clarksville, Md.) was more decisive, 8-4. SU went into the singles matches with a 3-0 lead.

In singles action the Sea Gulls finished the day with five consecutive victories by Elaina Iosue, Tenaglia, Poppe, Burr and Rachel Iosue to improve to 2-0 on the season. Tenaglia had no trouble at No. 5 singles as she easily came away with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Poppe and Burr recorded 6-3, 6-4 wins at No. 1 and 4 singles over their respective opponents. The final singles win was Rachel Iosue's No. 2 singles victory, 6-4, 6-3.

The Sea Gulls will next take the courts on March 15, as they will travel to California for their spring break tour.
