Iosue named CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly conference player of the week awards for women's tennis and Salisbury University junior Rachel Iosue has been named the recipient for the week of March 25. This is the first CAC Player of the Week award for Iosue this season and the second for the Sea Gull program. Junior Jackie Burr was named the CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on March 10.
Iosue picked up eight victories for the Sea Gulls on their Spring Break trip to California last week. She went a perfect 5-0 at No. 2 singles and 3-2 at second doubles. The Damascus, Md., native won four of her five singles matches in straight sets. Iosue began the trip by taking home a pair of victories against University of La Verne as she won 6-1, 6-1 in singles and teamed up with fellow classmate Kelly Fahrner to win 8-4 in doubles. She was perfect in SU's second match of the day against Whittier College as she won 6-0, 6-0 at singles and 8-0 in doubles. In Salisbury's match against No. 20 Sewanee-University of the South she scored two of SU's three points against the nationally ranked Tigers in the 6-3 loss. Iosue won 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 in singles and 9-8 (7-2) in doubles. The next day she posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory in singles but lost a tightly contested match in doubles 7-9 to Colorado College. In Salisbury's last match of its trip, Iosue dropped an 8-5 decision in doubles but rebounded with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in singles against California Lutheran University. Iosue is 7-0 on the season at No. 2 singles and 5-2 at second doubles.
The Sea Gulls will begin their CAC season this weekend as the Sea Gulls play four conference matches in two days. The Sea Gulls will travel to Wesley College on Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m. then return home that afternoon to host York (Pa.) College at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Sea Gulls hit the road and will face Hood College and Stevenson University at their respective venues.
