MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Salisbury University
tennis program swept Chowan University on Sunday with back-to-back
routs in men's and women's tennis. The Sea Gulls won 9-0 in the
women's match and 8-1 in the men's match.
The Salisbury women's team (4-2) swept every singles match,
except No. 1 singles, by the perfect score of 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore
Kelly Fahrner won at No. 1 singles for the Sea
Gulls with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Chowan's Mary Tolson. In
women's doubles, the Sea Gulls won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by
the score of 8-1. Junior Lauren Bakker and
freshman Angela Tenglia won at No. 3 doubles for
SU with an 8-0 victory.
On the men's side, the Sea Gulls (5-0), swept the singles
matches but dropped a doubles match to the Hawks. Junior
Matt Nicholson went three sets against Chowan's
Darick Gilman in No. 1 singles but came away with the 4-6, 6-0, 6-2
win. Sophomore Marcus Robinson and freshman
Andrew Nottage lost their first doubles match of
the '08 season as Chowan's Adam Moneypenny and Jonathan Walker won
9-8 with a 7-4 tiebreaker.
Salisbury is on the road this week as the Sea Gulls travel to
Virginia Wesleyan College (Tuesday, March 11) and York (Pa.)
College (Friday, March 14) before leaving for California on Spring
Break.
