Thunder sinks Sea Gulls in day two of tournament

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team fell to Wheaton College of Illinois on the final day of the annual Salisbury University Classic, 3-0.

The Thunder (2-0) made the most of its early possessions, scoring two of its three goals in the first five minutes of the match. The first goal came only 1:32 into the contest on a cross from the right side of the box that was redirected down low and just out of the diving reach of starting goalkeeper Emma Hill. Three minutes later a breakaway up the left side doubled the score for the visitors.

Head Coach Kwame Lloyd countered the Thunder's speed up front by making a few early substitutions and the decision paid off, as control of the ball became more balanced for the rest of the first half, with Wheaton edging out Salisbury (1-1) in shots from that point forward, 5-3.

A shot by forward Julie Venere just before the 24-minute mark proved to be the best scoring opportunity for the Sea Gulls in the first half. Venere was able to break past the last line of defense and enter the left side of the box, but her shot ended up sailing just outside the right corner of the net.

Play remained even for most of the second half, as each side recorded three shots apiece. Wheaton's final shot of the game, with less than five minutes to play, resulted in the team's third goal of the contest on a feed from outside the right corner of the box that was redirected into the far corner of the goal.

The Sea Gulls will return to action on Tuesday, September 4 when they host the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium. That match is set to kick off at 4 p.m.
