YORK, Pa. – After making its second-straight trip to the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals in 2014, the Salisbury University women's soccer team will begin its season as the No. 2 team in the league, the conference announced on Wednesday.
The Sea Gulls, who return 12 seniors to the field in 2015, earned two first-place votes and accumulated a total of 70 points to earn the second spot. Along with experience, SU brings back practically all of its goal scoring, which puts the Gulls in place to compete for a CAC championship. SU recorded an overall record of 10-6-3 last season with a 7-2 mark in the CAC, making it all the way to the conference semifinals before falling to the University of Mary Washington.
Christopher Newport University takes the No. 1 spot in the conference for the second-straight season, receiving seven first-place votes and garnering 78 points. The Captains, who earned an overall record of 12-4-4 and a conference mark of 8-0-1, lost to Frostburg State University in the CAC semifinals before earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and falling to Stevenson University in the first round.
FSU sits at third place with one first-place vote and 65 points, and York College of Pennsylvania (56 points) and St. Mary's College of Maryland (49 points) round out the top five.
The Sea Gulls begin their season at home on Tuesday, September 1 when they take on Stockton University at the SU Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
