SALISBURY, Md. – Senior midfielder Amanda Miele matched a career-high with two goals as the Salisbury University women's soccer team defeated Christopher Newport University, 2-1, on Wednesday at the SU Soccer Complex. The win proved to be the second in a row for the Sea Gulls, who have now defeated the Captains three times over the past five seasons.
Salisbury (4-3-2) opened the scoring in the contest when Miele took a pass from junior midfielder Casey Hafford and deposited the ball into the bottom right of the net in the 19th minute. The Sea Gulls would maintain the 1-0 lead over the next 40 minutes before junior forward Sarah Pfundstein dished a perfectly executed ball to Miele, who finished the goal for her sixth tally of the season.
Christopher Newport (2-5-0) brought the game to within one goal in the 72nd minute when Kelsey Thomas was able to finish a rebound for the Captains' only goal of the game. SU freshman goalie Michelle Conrad turned away the first shot, but Thomas was able to run onto the ball and finish, cutting the lead to 2-1. The SU defense would take control the rest of the way to seal the win.
SU was led by Miele, who has now notched four goals in the past two SU wins. The Salisbury offense was paced by freshman forward Morgan Brasch (three shots) and sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell (two shots). Conrad registered five saves in the victory. The Sea Gulls outshot the Captains, 13-12, while also holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Sea Gulls look to keep up their winning ways when they host Hood College in the team's Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. SU has won the past four meetings against Hood, and has outscored the Blazers 15-0 over that span.
