Sea Gulls victorious in season opener, 3-1, over Rutgers-Camden

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team opened its season with a win defeating Rutgers-Camden, 3-1, at the SU Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The victory marks Salisbury's 13th home opener win in 17 seasons and snaps a two-game home opener losing streak.

Rutgers-Camden opened up the scoring just two minutes into the game with a penalty kick goal, but from there the Sea Gulls would take over the game. Salisbury dominated on both offense and defense outshooting the Raptors 37-7 for the game and holding them to only three shots on goal.

Junior midfielder Katie McMahon scored the Sea Gulls' first goal in the 29th minute of the first half off of an assist from sophomore defender Erin Mooney. McMahon ripped a shot from 30 yards sailing it right over the goalie's head.

In the 40th minute of the first half, Salisbury took the lead, 2-1, with a goal from sophomore forward Sarah Pfundstein. She was assisted on a cross by senior defender Noel Bolmer

Mooney added a goal of her own in the second half to give Salisbury its final score of the day.

The Sea Gulls will be in action again on Friday, Sept. 3 against Fredonia State at 3 p.m. at the SU Soccer Complex as part of the SU Tournament. Fredonia State will take on Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon and the Sea Gulls and Blue Jays will meet Sunday at 2 p.m.
