LYNCHBURG, Va.
- The Salisbury University women's soccer team
went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's elite teams, No. 6
Lynchburg College, on Sunday afternoon on the Hornet's home turf.
The Sea Gulls tied the game in the second half to
force overtime where the two squads played to a 1-1
tie after two extra periods on the final day of the
Shellenberger Classic.
Salisbury (2-1-1) trailed early as Lynchburg (3-0-1) got on the
board with an unassisted goal by midfielder Joanie Snyder in the
22nd minute. The Hornets attacked the Sea Gull goal in the first
half as Lynchburg ripped off 11 shots. Lynchburg led 1-0 at the
half.
In the second half, the Hornets continued to sting the Salisbury
defense with 12 shots and two corner kicks. The Sea Gulls swung the
momentum in their favor at the 71st minute when senior midfielder
Dana Passucci scored an unassisted goal past
Hornet goalie Anna Wright (four saves).
The two teams went into overtime where Lynchburg held Salisbury
without a shot while the Hornets had one shot in the first overtime
period and four in the second. Lynchburg outshot Salisbury 28-9 in
the game led by forward Betsy Kwiatkowski's 11 shots (seven on
goal).
SU senior goalie Gena Goodson turned in a
career game as she made 11 saves including four in the overtime
periods.
Salisbury returns to the state of Virginia on Wednesday when the
Sea Gulls face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College at 7 p.m.
Last season, the two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie on
September 12 in Salisbury, Md.
