VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The road to victory for
the Salisbury University women's soccer team was blocked by another
nationally ranked team on Wednesday night as the Sea Gulls lost 2-0
to No. 21 Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Marlins (3-2), ranked No. 3 in the south region, outshot the
Sea Gulls 12-1 en route to their third straight shutout in five
days.
Junior Sara Schmidt had the lone shot for the
Sea Gulls as she took it in the second half. Senior goalie
Samantha Phipps made five saves in goal as she
faced a dozen shots from the Marlins.
VWC got on the board in the first half on a header by Jackie
Ochs-Gregory at the 23rd minute of the game with an assist credited
to Laura Jackson. The Marlins' second goal was also a header, this
time from Danielle Fiedler with an assist to Ally Hodgkins at the
59th minute.
Salisbury will open up Capital Athletic Conference play on
Saturday in Washington, D.C. as the Gulls take on Catholic
University. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
