INDIANAPOLIS – The field of 42 teams has been set for the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, and the No. 3 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team will host opening-weekend action at Sea Gull Stadium. Meredith College and United States Merchant Marine Academy will play a first-round game on Saturday, May 12, with the winner facing Salisbury on Sunday, May 13 in the second round.
The Sea Gulls (18-1) earned an automatic bid into the tournament after collecting their 16th consecutive, and 18th overall, Capital Athletic Conference championship, defeating the University of Mary Washington 12-7 on Saturday, May 5.
Salisbury will be appearing in its 19th NCAA tournament while seeking to advance to championship weekend for the 11th time in program history.
Meredith (15-4) enters the tournament after defeating Piedmont College 21-3 in the USA South Athletic Conference championship game. Meredith returns to Salisbury two years after falling to Cabrini College in the first round of the 2016 tournament. If the Avenging Angels were to advance to the second round to face the Sea Gulls, it would be the first-ever meeting.
Merchant Marine (14-2) earned the automatic bid out of the Skyline Conference, defeating St. Joseph's (N.Y.) College 13-10 in the championship game. The Mariners will be playing in their first-ever NCAA tournament after capturing the program's first conference title. This would also be the first meeting between the two teams if the Mariners were to advance to the second round against the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury's road to Salem, Virginia will begin on Sunday, May 13, when it will host the winner of Meredith and Merchant Marine. The first and second-round games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
