FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's lacrosse team was chosen to finish first in the Capital Athletic Conference this season and defend its title, according to the CAC preseason poll released on Friday morning.
The Sea Gulls garnered five first-place votes and 61 total points to sit atop the poll, narrowly beating out York College of Pennsylvania, who came in second with four first-place votes and a total of 60 points.
The University of Mary Washington received 50 points to come in third, followed by Christopher Newport University (42 points) in fourth and St. Mary's College of Maryland (36 points) rounding out the top five.
Salisbury beat York 7-2 to clinch its 15th straight conference championship and 17th overall last season. The Sea Gulls finished with a 16-6 overall record, falling to eventual national champion Gettysburg College in the regional finals.
The maroon and gold come into the 2018 season ranked No. 9 in the IWLCA preseason poll. The team will open its season on Saturday, February 17 at Stevenson University. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
