Women’s lacrosse selected to host opening weekend in NCAA tournament, will take on the winner of Meredith and Cabrini

INDIANAPOLIS – The field of 40 teams has been laid out for the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, and the No. 3 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team will host opening-weekend action at Sea Gull Stadium. Meredith College and Cabrini College will compete in the first round of the tournament on Saturday, May 14 at Sea Gull Stadium, and Salisbury will take on the winner on Sunday, May 15 in the second round.

The Sea Gulls (16-2) earned an automatic bid into the tournament after earning its 16th, and 14th-consecutive, Capital Athletic Conference title by defeating St. Mary's College of Maryland, 12-5, in the championship game on Saturday, April 30.

Salisbury, which is appearing in its 16th NCAA tournament, is looking to advance to the championship weekend for the 11th time in program history.

Meredith (17-1) enters the postseason after earning its third-consecutive automatic bid, taking down Piedmont College, 17-11, in the USA South championship game. If the Avenging Angels were to advance to the second round to face the Sea Gulls, it would be their first-ever meeting.

Cabrini (13-5) earned an automatic qualifier after notching an 18-10 victory over Neumann University for its 15th conference championship. If the Cavaliers were to advance to play the Sea Gulls, it would be their third meeting. Both previous meetings took place at Salisbury in the NCAA tournament. In 2004, Salisbury came up with an 18-7 victory over Cabrini to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals. The two teams' most recent matchup came on May 8, 2013 when the Sea Gulls took down the Cavaliers 21-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Salisbury's road to Philadelphia begins on Sunday, May 15, when it will host the winner of Meredith and Cabrini. The time of the game is still to be determined. The winner of the second-round matchup will advance to the regional weekend on May 21-22.
