OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The ninth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team opened up its 2016 campaign with a solid 9-5 victory over Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon.
Salisbury scored the first three goals of the game and Stevenson could not answer until more than 20 minutes into the first half.
With the score sitting at 3-1, the Gulls went on another three-goal run to take a commanding 6-1 lead into the second stanza.
Nieves added her second assist on a score from freshman Gabrielle Mongno, and Wallenhorst scored her first on a free-position shot to lead the 3-0 spurt just before the half.
More than seven minutes ticked off the clock in the second half before Salisbury could capitalize again, but it was Wallenhorst with her second, an unassisted goal, to stretch the advantage to 7-1.
Stevenson would score the next two goals before the teams traded goals twice to bring the final tally to 9-5; sophomore Allie Hynson and Mongno added the Gulls' final two tallies.
The Gulls were led in scoring by Wallenhorst and Mongno, who both netted a pair of goals. Nieves led the way with three assists, while King notched one goal and one assist. All in all, seven different Sea Gulls found the back of the net.
Salisbury's next four contests will be at home, starting with a clash against Roanoke College on Tuesday, February 23 at 3 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for February 16 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
