GRAND LAKE, Colo. – After bringing the national championship trophy back to the Eastern Shore, the Salisbury University women's lacrosse team will send two seniors back North for another game before their collegiate careers come to an end. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced the 2014 North-South All-Star Game rosters, and Shannon Carta and Meghan Toomey were named to the South squad.
Carta finished off her senior season leading the Sea Gulls in points and assists with 77 and 35, respectively. Honored as an IWLCA All-Region selection, the Annapolis, Md., native scooped 24 groundballs, won 16 draw controls and caused 13 turnovers. With 42 goals through 22 games, the starting attacker led the team in free-position goals, finishing with 14 off the 23 attempted. In the national championship game on Sunday, May 25, in Gettysburg, Pa., Carta recorded a career-high four assists to help the Sea Gulls to their third program title.
Toomey started in all 23 games that she played in this season, forcing 15 turnovers, winning 13 draws and picking up 33 loose balls. The Annapolis, Md., native was a crucial link in the backline for Salisbury, helping the Sea Gulls to a 5.92 goals-against average for the season, fifth best in the country. Following the national championship, the senior captain was named to the All-Tournament team for the second-consecutive year.
The IWLCA has honored 132 senior student-athletes through the three divisions with selection to one of the 2014 North-South rosters. The 2014 North-South games will take place at Cabrini College, in Radnor, PA., on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Game times are: Division I - 11:30 a.m., Division II - 12:45 p.m., and Division III - 2 p.m.
