Road to championship weekend starts May 10 for No. 2 Gulls

INDIANAPOLIS – The road to championship weekend in Gettysburg, Pa., kicks off on Saturday, May 10 for the reigning national champions, as the 2014 Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament field was set Sunday night by the NCAA. The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team has received a first-round bye and will host a second-round game against Farmingdale State University; the time is to be announced.

The Sea Gulls (18-1) received an automatic bid into the tournament after claiming the Capital Athletic Conference title for the 12th-consecutive year. Salisbury faced off against No. 13 York College of Pennsylvania in the conference final for the third-straight year, downing the Spartans, 13-6.

With their only loss this season being suffered to the top-ranked State University of New York at Cortland, the Gulls enter the NCAA tournament for the 15th time in program history, 12th in row. Salisbury has made quite a statement in the tournament dating back to the 2000 season, advancing to nine semifinal rounds and six title matches to be crowned national champions twice. Last season, the Sea Gulls claimed the hardware after going a perfect 23-0 and defeating Trinity (Conn.) College in the final match of the season, 12-5; a rematch of the 2012 title game.

Salisbury will meet the Rams (18-1), for the first time in program history, at Sea Gull Stadium for the start of its tournament play. Farmingdale received an automatic bid into the tournament after claiming the Skyline Conference title. The Rams defeated St. Joseph's College, 9-8, in the conference championship.

Four first-round games will be conducted on Wednesday, May 7 with the winners advancing to the second round. Sixteen second-round games will be conducted on Saturday, May 10 with the winners advancing to one of four regional sites May 17-18. Winners of the four regionals will advance to the semifinals and final, which take place May 24 and 25 at Clark Field in Gettysburg, Pa. Gettysburg will serve as host for the championship.
