YORK, Pa. – The No. 1 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team claimed two Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards this week, as juniors Shelby Nemecek and Bethany Baer were honored, the league announced Monday.
Nemecek earned Co-Offensive Player of the Week after recording seven goals and an assist in two games this past week. Against then-No. 6 Trinity (Conn.) College, the Marriottsville, Md., native scored three times in the opening 6-1 run for the Sea Gulls, while adding an assist to teammate Shannon Carta. In the 11-8 victory, the junior won two draw controls, caused two turnovers and picked up one groundball. Against No. 4 Franklin & Marshall College, Nemecek scored a team-high four times in the 9-8 victory.
The junior captain now leads the Sea Gull offense with 20 goals and three assists for 23 points through seven games.
Baer claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors after putting on a stellar performance through two games this past week. In the game in Clermont, Fla., against Trinity, the midfielder won six draw controls, tied for a game-high with teammate Laura Maskell, while picking up a game-high four groundballs. In the win, Baer also posted a hat trick and an assist for four points.
Against the Diplomats, the junior captain caused three turnovers while winning one draw control and scooping up three loose balls. Baer added another three goals in the victory, recording six for the week with an assist for seven points.
The women take the field on Wednesday, March 26, for their next contest, as the Sea Gulls take on No. 12 Colby College. First draw is set for 4 p.m., at Sea Gull Stadium.
