NEW YORK – Salisbury University senior Ashton Wheatley has been named to the 2014 Tewaaraton Award women's lacrosse watch list presented by Panama Jack and announced by The Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday night.
Wheatley, Lacrosse Magazine's Division III Preseason Player of the Year, is the reigning two-time Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III Goalkeeper of the Year. Being named First-Team All-American twice in her career, the Cambridge, Md., native is just seven games shy of holding the school record in wins while protecting the net.
Helping guide the No. 1 Sea Gulls to a 2-0 start this season, Wheatley has recorded 14 saves and allowed just seven goals after facing 23 shots for a 3.70 goals-against average.
The senior goalkeeper is just one of two Division III players recognized on the list.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of top collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Players will be added to the list on March 20 and April 10, and then will be trimmed to 25 nominees on April 24. The five finalists will be announced on May 8, with the award presented on May 29 in Washington D.C.
The women take the field for their next contest on Saturday, March 1, as Catholic University of America travels to Sea Gull Stadium. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
