Salisbury sits at No. 2 in Top 20 preseason poll

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Salisbury University women's lacrosse team has been ranked No. 2 in the nation in the preseason rankings as selected by Lacrosse Magazine; the rankings were released in the January issue of the magazine. The rest of the top five includes No. 1 Franklin & Marshall College, No. 3 Gettysburg College, No. 4 Hamilton College and No. 5 The College of New Jersey.

The top ten is rounded out by No. 6 Middlebury College, No. 7 Catholic University, No. 8 Tufts University, No. 9 Union (N.Y.) College and No. 10 Colby College.

Six of Salisbury's opponents on this year's schedule are ranked in the top 20 along with them.  They include No. 1 Franklin & Marshall, No. 5 TCNJ, No. 7 Catholic, No. 9 Union, No. 18 Roanoke and No. 19 Washington & Lee.

The No. 2-ranked Sea Gulls are coming off of a season with an overall record of 20-2 and a perfect conference record of 7-0 in which they had advanced to the Division III National Championship game and had won their seventh consecutive CAC Championship. The 2009 campaign was the third time in five years that Salisbury was a National Finalist. Franklin & Marshall defeated Salisbury 11-10 in overtime in the Championship.

Sea Gulls look forward to have another strong season in 2010 with four of their top five scorers from a year ago returning. Senior Beth Rhodey (Fallston, Md.) was the team's leading scorer last season with 77 points (54 goals, 23 assists). She is joined by junior Logan Bilderback (Arnold, Md.) (67 points), senior Kim Cudmore (Bel Air, Md.) (55 points) and junior Meagan Osipowich (Hauppauge, N.Y.) (47 points) who were ranked third, fourth and fifth on the team in scoring, respectively.

The defense is highlighted by seniors Jess Glazer (Ellicott City, Md.) and Sarah McKinley (Timonium, Md.) who were both All-Region performers for SU last season.

The Sea Gulls' season opens at Christopher Newport University on Feb. 20 at 1 p.m., and their first home game is against Hood College at 1 p.m. on Feb. 21.
