Chmielewski selected to Tewaaraton Trophy watch list
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Tewaaraton Award Foundation announced it 2009 Women's Lacrosse Preseason Watch List and Salisbury University senior midfielder Jessica Chmielewski made the list of 45. Chmielewski is one of only three Division III players on the Division I dominated list for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given out each May to the best men's and women's lacrosse player in the nation.
The 45 players on this list have been nominated by coaches from all three NCAA divisions and are early season candidates for the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy. The list will be narrowed periodically as the season continues, ultimately reaching a final list of five players who form the finalists.
Salisbury is the only Division III team to have one student-athlete on both the men's and women's watch lists. SU senior midfielder Kylor Berkman is on the men's watch list for a second straight year. In fact, only nine total programs from all divisions have at least one men's and women's players on both watch list. Those programs include Salisbury, Duke, Maryland, Virginia, Princeton, Syracuse, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Georgetown.
Chmielewski, an All-American second team selection last season, was second on the team with 92 points as she scored 51 goals and added 41 assists. She was also named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference first team and the All-Chesapeake Region first team at the end of the '08 season.
The Woodbine, Md., native helped No. 3 Salisbury begin the season on the right foot as she scored four goals and two assists against Christopher Newport University on February 18 as SU won 18-8.
In 2007, then junior attacker Sue Ackermann was nominated for the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list. Ackermann finished the season as an All-American first team selection as she recorded 51 goals and 68 assists (119 points).
The 9th annual award will be presented on Thursday, May 28, in the University Club of Washington, D.C.. To read more about the Tewaaraton Trophy visit www.tewaaraton.com.
