No. 2 Salisbury scores 20 goals in rout of Wesley

DOVER, Del. - The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team scored 20 plus goals for the third straight game, ninth time overall this season, as the Sea Gulls won 20-2 over Wesley College on the road Tuesday in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.

Salisbury (13-1, 6-0 CAC) remains in first place in the conference as it has one final CAC game on its regular-season schedule next week against University of Mary Washington on April 15.

The Sea Gulls had 11 different goal scorers in the 18-goal victory. Freshman Sarah Clemmens led the way with a career-high four goals and two assists for a six-point game. SU scored the game's first three goals before the Wolverines (6-8, 0-6 CAC) got on the scoreboard five minutes into the game on a Jade Martin goal. Salisbury scored the next 12 goals as it led 15-1 at the intermission. Wesley scored a quick goal to begin the second half before the Sea Gulls rattled off five straight to end the game. Freshman Mackenzie White scored three goals in a row in the second half as she set a new career-high for goals in a game.

Freshman Alyssa Fowler scored twice and added a game-high three assists. Junior Beth Rhodey, the CAC Player of the Week, scored two early goals for the Sea Gulls and later added an assist. Sophomore Liz Filgueras and freshman Carrie Bray (one assist) scored two goals apiece. Single goals were scored by senior Sarah McKinley, sophomores Trish DiGirolomo (one assist) and Logan Bilderback along with freshman Amanda Holsclaw.

SU outshot Wesley 32-6, scooped up 26 ground balls, won 17-of-23 draw controls, scored two free position goals and cleared 7-of-10 opportunities. As a team Salisbury had its best showing this season for shots on goal (.906 percentage). Senior goalie Sonja Stuart (12-1) made two saves in the victory. Wesley goalie Farryn Kauffman suffers the loss as she made nine saves.

The win sets up a showdown between new No. 1 The College of New Jersey and the No. 2 Sea Gulls on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. in Sea Gull Stadium. This will be the second straight year the two teams entered as the top two teams in the country. In 2008, top-ranked Salisbury beat the second-ranked Lions, 11-10, in overtime on the road.
