Stuart named CAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly conference player of the week awards and Salisbury University senior goalie Sonja Stuart was named the women's lacrosse honoree for the week of April 13. This is the first time in the Rockville, Md., native has received this honor in her career at SU. This is the fourth time this season a Sea Gull player has received this award. Stuart is the first defensive player to be credited this year season by the CAC.
Stuart and the Sea Gulls (14-1, 6-0 CAC) defeated top-ranked The College of New Jersey 11-6 last Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium. Stuart recorded 11 saves for the Gulls, which ties her previous season-high as the senior recorded 11 stops in a win over No. 3 Franklin & Marshall College. At the end of the first half the score was 5-4 in favor of Salisbury. Stuart recorded eight second half saves for SU. Stuart and the rest of the SU defense held TCNJ's top goal scorer Alison Jaeger (42 goals scored) to just one assist. The senior scooped up a team-high six ground balls plus helped the Sea Gulls convert 16-of-22 clears.
The three other SU award winners of the CAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week honor includes junior Beth Rhodey (April 6), junior Kim Cudmore (March 23) and sophomore Logan Bilderback (March 9).
The victory completes a sweep of last year's final four teams. Salisbury beat defending national champion Hamilton College 12-9 on March 18 in San Antonio, Texas. The Continentals were ranked No. 1 in that game. SU followed that with a 10-9 road win over No. 3 Franklin & Marshall College on March 29.
The Sea Gulls will close out the CAC regular season this Wednesday, April 15, in a game against University of Mary Washington (11-5, 5-1 CAC). This contest has huge implications on the upcoming CAC tournament as both teams are vying for the No. 1 seed.
