Seven Sea Gulls land on All-CAC first team, Nestor repeats as Coach of the Year
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its all-conference awards for women's lacrosse and seven Salisbury University Sea Gulls were honored. The top-ranked Sea Gulls (17-1) had seven athletes named to the All-CAC first team. SU head coach Jim Nestor won CAC Coach of the Year honors for the seventh consecutive season as his team won their seventh consecutive and ninth overall CAC championship.
Seniors Holly Johnson, Sarah McKinley, Robyn Bishop and Sonja Stuart plus juniors Kim Cudmore, Beth Rhodey and Jess Glazer were all honored on the first team. Glazer is the only member of the group to make a second appearance on the all-conference team as she earned second team honors last season.
Bishop, Cudmore and Rhodey were part of the SU's high potent offense which is the third best scoring offense in the nation. Bishop had a strong senior season for the Gulls as she scored a team-high 48 goals, including four game-winners and dished out 12 assists. The Columbia, Md., native won a team-high 58 draw controls, scooped up 30 ground balls and caused 20 turnovers. Cudmore scored 26 goals and is tied for the lead in assists with 29 assists. Cudmore had one game-winner, 16 ground balls and won 16 draw controls. Rhodey leads the team in points with 66 on 46 goals and 20 assists. The junior has four game-winning goals, scooped up 31 ground balls, won 27 draw controls and caused 14 turnovers.
Johnson, McKinley, Glazer and Stuart made it difficult for opposing offenses to score as the group was the fifth best scoring defense in the nation at 7.17 goals per game. Johnson scored 10 goals, scooped up 25 ground balls, won seven draw controls and caused 15 turnovers. McKinley had a strong senior season for the Gulls as the Timonium, Md., native scored two goals, one assist, picked up 21 ground balls, won 14 draw controls and caused 10 turnovers. Glazer backed up her all-conference honor with a strong junior season as she was masterful on clears for SU, scooped up 17 ground balls, won five draw controls and caused 12 turnovers.
Stuart closes out her career in between the pipes as the Rockville, Md., native is 16-1 for SU. Stuart has played over 900 minutes in the net as the senior has a 7.31 goals against average, made 108 saves, scooped up a team-high 34 ground balls and had 10 caused turnovers. Stuart was impressive on free position attempts as she allowed 28 goals on 80 attempts.
This marks the sixth time in program history that the Gulls have had at least seven players receive All-CAC honors in one season. SU has had 80 All-CAC honors since 1996, 55 of those honors have been first-team selections.
St. Mary's (Md.) College senior Lauren Carrier was named CAC Player of the Year and freshman Catherine Kennedy from University of Mary Washington was named CAC Rookie of the Year.
