OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The No. 2 Salisbury
University women's lacrosse team pounced on Villa Julie College in
a Tuesday afternoon Capital Athletic Conference game on the road.
The Sea Gulls (8-0, 4-0 CAC) scored the game's first 14 goals and
never looked back as the maroon and gold waltzed to a 21-2 drubbing
of the Mustangs.
SU used seven different goal scorers to post a 12-0 halftime
lead after 30 minutes of play. Senior Jessica
Liston (two assists) led the charge for the maroon and
gold as she scored three first half goals. Fellow senior
Sue Ackermann (two goals, one assist) scored the
game's first goal just over four minutes into the game. The next
five goals included sophomore Beth Rhodey (two
goals, four assists), who either got the assist or fired home a
goal.
In the second half, Salisbury picked up where it left off in the
first half with two back-to-back goals from junior Jessica
Chmielewski (five goals, one assist) and sophomore
Kim Cudmore (three goals, three assists) before
the Mustangs got on the board. Villa Julie's Kristyna Hnizda scored
an unassisted goal at the 27:08 mark to end nearly 33 minutes of
scoreless play for the Mustangs.
Chmielewski, Cudmore and junior Ashleigh Gender
(two goals) combined to go on a 4-0 run as SU led 18-1 with 13
minutes left in the game. Villa Julie's Lisa Baker scored an
unassisted goal with 11 minutes left in the game. SU closed out the
contest with three straight free position goals, capped by Gender's
tally with seven seconds left.
SU's other goal scorers included junior Courtney
Sorenson (two goals, one assist), sophomore
Stephanie Cahill (one goal) and freshman
Logan Bilderback (one goal).
Junior Sonja Stuart was solid in goal for the
Sea Gulls as she made six saves in one half of play. Sophomore
Natalie Pappas finished the game and made two
saves in the final 30 minutes.
Salisbury outshot Villa Julie 35-16 and held a 25-14 advantage
in ground balls. The Mustangs won 13-of-24 draw controls as Villa
Julie committed 24 turnovers. The Gulls were 4-for-9 on free
position opportunities. The Sea Gulls surpassed 20 goals for
the sixth time this season, fourth straight game.
The Sea Gulls will return home and host No. 15 SUNY Cortland on
Saturday, March 15, at Noon in Sea Gull Stadium. The Red
Dragons are the first ranked opponent the Sea Gulls have faced all
season.
