SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 3
Salisbury University women's lacrosse team received an entire team
effort on a cold Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium as the
maroon and gold routed Randolph-Macon College, 24-1. Salisbury
(3-0) had 12 different goal scorers as 11 of its 35 points came
from non-starters.
Salisbury senior Sue Ackermann (five goals,
four assists) assisted fellow senior Jessica
Liston (two goals, one assist) on back-to-back plays to
score the game's first two goals one minute into the contest. SU
stormed out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first half before the
Yellow Jackets ended the shutout on a Lacy Phelps free-position
goal. The Gulls led 12-1 at the half and closed out the game with
17 unanswered goals. Salisbury has outscored its first three
opponents 67-6 with one shutout to begin the season.
SU's ferocious defense dictated the tempo of the game as it
allowed the Yellow Jackets to clear the ball only five times
(5-for-22 for the game) as the Sea Gulls forced 25 turnovers.
Salisbury won 21-of-27 draw controls and outshot R-MC, 45-6. Senior
defender Kelly Phillips snagged six draw controls
as she anchored the Sea Gull defense in front of SU goalie
Sonja Stuart (three saves).
The Sea Gull offense was paced led by Ackermann's nine points
followed by junior Jessica Chmielewski's five
points (three goals, two assists). SU also received multiple goals
from senior Alexis Morrell (two goals, one
assist), sophomores Beth Rhodey (three goals) and
Kim Cudmore (two goals, one assist).
The Gulls will return to action Wednesday, February 27, for a 3
p.m. road game at Virginia Wesleyan College.
