SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 3 Salisbury University
women's lacrosse team opened its 2008 season with a 24-0 shutout
victory over Capital Athletic Conference newcomer Hood College
Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium. The shutout was Salisbury's
first since March 14, 2007 when the Sea Gulls defeated Marymount
(Va.) University, 22-0.
Salisbury (1-0, 1-0 CAC), the five-time defending CAC champions,
scored early and often in the first half as the maroon and gold
netted 11 goals in just over eight minutes to start the game.
Senior Sue Ackermann, the 2007 CAC Player of the
Year, picked up where she left off last season as she scored four
goals and three assists to lead all scorers with seven points.
Five Sea Gulls finished with four-point games; junior
Jess Chmielewski (two goals, two assists), junior
Courtney Sorenson (one goal, three assists),
freshmen Logan Bilderback (three goals, one
assist), sophomore Beth Rhodey (three goals, one
assist) and sophomore Kim Cudmore (three assists,
one goal).
This was Salisbury's first game on the new A-Turf surface at Sea
Gull Stadium. Salisbury outshot Hood, 32-0, and won 22-of-26 draw
controls. This was the largest margin of victory in Coach
Jim Nestor's seven-year tenure at SU. The last
time the Sea Gulls won by 24 or more goals was on March 4, 2000,
when Salisbury defeated the College of Notre Dame, 29-1.
Hood (0-1, 0-1 CAC) was led by senior goalie Lauren Lieb's four
saves in the team's CAC debut. In 2007, the Blazers reached the
championship game of the Atlantic Women College's Conference.
The maroon and gold will return to action on Tuesday, February
19, with a road trip to Newport News, Va., to face Christopher
Newport University in a non-conference 3 p.m. contest.
