SU trio selected to play in North-South women's lacrosse game

SALISBURY, Md. - Three Salisbury University women's lacrosse seniors will get the chance to play one more game as a Sea Gull. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) recently announced its North-South Division III teams and three Sea Gulls, co-captains Sue Ackermann and Jessica Liston along with Kelly Phillips, will represent the South on June 14 in Downingtown, Pa.

Ackermann, the two-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, capped off one of the best careers ever for a Sea Gull in women's lacrosse history. The Sykesville, Md., native finished the '08 season two points shy of tying the all-time NCAA record for points in a single-season (154, set in 1996). Ackermann finished the season with 152 points on 82 goals and 70 assists. The two-time All-CAC first team selection graduates as the all-time SU leader in points (321) and assists (149). She is second all-time in goals (172).

Liston finished the '08 campaign ranked in the top five in many categories for the Sea Gulls. She was second on the team in ground balls (31) and draw controls (41), fourth in goals (37), fifth in points (47) and caused turnovers (12) and sixth in assists (10). The Crownsville, Md., native was also an All-CAC second team selection.

Phillips, a two-time All-CAC first team selection, was the anchor on the SU defense ranked among the best in the nation. The 2007 National Defender of the Year finished the season second in caused turnovers (22), third in ground balls (30) and fourth in draw controls (30). The Massapequa Park, N.Y., native used her blazing speed to record numerous clears for the maroon and gold and start the transition game.

Salisbury was one of three schools to have a record three players selected. The two other schools are Gettysburg College and The College of New Jersey. Salisbury finished the season with a 22-1 mark, which is a school record, in the NCAA national semifinals.
