SALISBURY, Md. - For the second straight year
the Salisbury University women's lacrosse team had five players
named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association
(IWLCA) All-Chesapeake Region first team. The Sea Gulls placed a
program record eight players on one of the two All-Chesapeake
Region teams.
Seniors Sue Ackermann and Kelly
Phillips are making their second consecutive appearance on
the all-region first team. The two are joined on the first team by
fellow senior Jessica Liston and juniors
Robyn Bishop and Jessica
Chmielewski. The Sea Gulls (22-1) had three players on the
second team they include; junior Sonja Stuart and
sophomores Jess Glazer and Beth
Rhodey.
Ackermann, the two-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of
the Year, capped off one of the best careers ever for a Sea Gull in
women's lacrosse history. The Sykesville, Md., native finished the
'08 season two points shy of tying the all-time NCAA record for
points in a single-season (154, set in 1996). Ackermann finished
the season with 152 points on 82 goals and 70 assists. The two-time
All-CAC first team selection graduates as the all-time SU leader in
points (321) and assists (149). She is second all-time in goals
(172).
Phillips, a two-time All-CAC first team selection, was the
anchor on the SU defense ranked among the best in the nation. The
2007 National Defender of the Year finished the season second in
caused turnovers (22), third in ground balls (30) and fourth in
draw controls (30). The Massapequa Park, N.Y., native used her
blazing speed to record numerous clears for the maroon and gold and
start the transition game.
Liston finished the '08 campaign ranked in the top five in many
categories for the Sea Gulls. She was second on the team in ground
balls (31) and draw controls (41), fourth in goals (37), fifth in
points (47) and caused turnovers (12) and sixth in assists (10).
The Crownsville, Md., native was also an All-CAC second team
selection.
Bishop led the Sea Gulls in draw controls (60) as the midfielder
started and played in 22 games in '08. The Columbia, Md., native
finished the year with 33 goals, six assists and 39 points. She was
ranked first on the team in caused turnovers (29) and ground balls
(32) while she was sixth overall in goals and points.
Chmielewski, an All-CAC first team selection, makes her first
appearance on the IWLCA All-Region team. The Woodbine, Md., native
ranks second on the team in points (92) and assists (41) and third
overall in goals (51). The midfielder has played in 61 games for
the maroon and gold in three seasons and has 136 points to her
credit.
Rhodey started in and played in all 23 games for SU in '08. She
finished the year ranked second on the team in goals (57), third in
points (74) and fourth in assists (17). Her best game was the
second game of the year against Christopher Newport where she
scored six goals and added two assists for a career-high mark of
eight points.
Glazer, an All-CAC second team defender, helped to make the SU
defense one of the best in the country. The Ellicott City, Md.,
native played in 20 games and finished the season with 20 ground
balls and 10 caused turnovers.
The combination of Phillips, Glazer, Liston and sophomore
Maddie Goetz created a great first line of defense
for Stuart the goalie. The Rockville, Md., native posted an
impressive 22-1 record in between the pipes for the maroon and
gold. She finished the year with a 7.09 goals against average along
with a .533 save percentage in over 1,015 minutes played.
The IWLCA honored a total of 224 student-athletes on one of the
All-Region teams which makes each one of them eligible for
inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams which will be
announced on May 29.
