Sea Gulls sweep CAC Coach and Player of the Year awards again

YORK, Pa. - Salisbury University senior Sue Ackermann repeated as the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year for the second season in a row as announced by the conference office Thursday. She joined four other members of the Salisbury women's lacrosse team on the 2008 all-conference teams.

Coach Jim Nestor was voted by his peers as the Co-Coach of the Year along with St. Mary's (Md.) College coach Carol Schmoeller, who was the 2004 CAC Player of the Year.

This is the sixth year in a row Nestor has earned this honor and fourth year in a row Salisbury swept the CAC Coach and Player of the Year awards. Nestor led Salisbury to their sixth consecutive CAC championship and a No. 1 ranking as the Sea Gulls wait for the NCAA tournament. Salisbury will enter with a perfect 20-0 record, a win shy of the school record for wins in a season.

Ackermann (Sykesville, Md./ Liberty) leads the Sea Gulls with 70 goals and 61 assists per game bringing her point total to 131, which currently ties the school record for points in a season which was set in 2001 by Christine Sliger. The Sea Gull standout is 15 points and seven assists shy of tying career records at Salisbury. This is the second straight year Ackermann has been named to the All-CAC first team.

Salisbury has earned the CAC Player of the Year award four years in a row, six times overall. Ackermann's older sister Linda was the 2005 CAC Player of the Year. They are the only set of sisters to win the CAC Player of the Year award since the conference began women's lacrosse in 1995.

Senior Kelly Phillips (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) joins Ackermann as a repeat first-team All-CAC selection as she anchors the fifth best defense in the country that allows a mere 6.22 goals per game. The 2007 Division III Defender of the Year ranks third on the team with 24 ground balls and has recorded 25 draw controls for the Sea Gulls this season. Phillips speed allowed her to cause 19 turnovers and assist Salisbury in many clear opportunities.

Salisbury junior Jessica Chmielewski (Woodbine, Md./ South Carroll) joins Ackermann and Phillips on the all-conference first team. The midfielder has been a key component in the Sea Gulls offense. Chmielewski has more than doubled her point total from a year ago (33 points) with 82 points thus far in '08. She is second on the team in points, assists (37) and third with 45 goals.

The Sea Gulls placed two defenders on the 2008 All-CAC second team, senior Jessica Liston (Crownsville, Md./ Old Mill) and sophomore Jess Glazer (Ellicott City, Md./ Mt. Hebron). Liston is a key midfield player for the Sea Gulls that plays both sides of the field. She leads the team in ground balls with 29. Liston is a major contributor to the offense where she is ranks fifth on the team in goals (32) and assists (10). Glazer rounds out the list for Salisbury as she started 17 games for the Sea Gulls this season and scooped up 18 ground balls and made nine caused turnovers.

University of Mary Washington and St. Mary's both matched Salisbury with five all-conference selections. All eight CAC teams were represented on the team. Seahawk freshman Aileen McCausland was named the CAC Rookie of the Year.
