BALTIMORE - The
Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and US
Lacrosse announced their 2008 Division III All-American teams
Thursday and Salisbury placed two players on the first and second
teams.
Senior Sue Ackermann makes her second straight
appearance on the first team along with first-time honoree junior
Robyn Bishop. On the second team, senior
Kelly Phillips earns her second All-American honor
while junior Jessica Chmielewski is honored for
the first time.
Ackermann is the second-ever Sea Gull to earn two All-American
first team honors. The last SU player to earn that distinction was
Jen Mezzadra in 2000 and 2001. Salisbury now has
30 All-Americans since 1978 and 19 under since coach Jim
Nestor took over the program in 2002. This is the fourth
straight season SU had four players earn All-American honors.
A quarter of the 48 student-athletes honored on one of the three
All-American teams came from the four national semifinalist teams;
Franklin & Marshall, Salisbury, The College of New Jersey and
the eventual national champion Hamilton.
All of the recipients will be honored at the 2008 IWLCA and US
Lacrosse national All-American and awards banquet on June 14, 2008
in King of Prussia, Pa.
Ackermann, the two-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of
the Year, capped off one of the best careers ever for a Sea Gull in
women's lacrosse history. The Sykesville, Md., native finished the
'08 season two points shy of tying the all-time NCAA record for
points in a single-season (154, set in 1996). The two-time IWLCA
All-Chesapeake region first team selection finished the season with
152 points on 82 goals and 70 assists. The two-time All-CAC first
team attacker graduates as the all-time SU leader in points (321)
and assists (149). She is second all-time in goals (172).
Bishop, the All-Chesapeake region first team honoree, led the
Sea Gulls in draw controls (60) as the midfielder started and
played in 22 games in '08. The Columbia, Md., native finished the
year with 33 goals, six assists and 39 points. She was ranked first
on the team in caused turnovers (29) and ground balls (32) while
she was sixth overall in goals and points.
Phillips, a two-time All-Chesapeake region and All-CAC first
team selection, was the anchor on the SU defense ranked among the
best in the nation. The 2007 National Defender of the Year and
first team All-American finished the season second in caused
turnovers (22), third in ground balls (30) and fourth in draw
controls (30). The Massapequa Park, N.Y., native used her blazing
speed to record numerous clears for the maroon and gold and start
the transition game.
Chmielewski, an All-Chesapeake region and All-CAC first team
midfield selection, ranks second on the team in points (92) and
assists (41) and third overall in goals (51). The Woodbine, Md.,
native has played in 61 games for the maroon and gold in three
seasons and has 136 points to her credit.
