FREDERICK, Md. - Salisbury University women's
lacrosse standout Sue Ackermann (Sykesville,
Md./Liberty) received a 2008 Maryland Association of College
Directors of Athletics (MACDA) post-graduate scholarship to
continue her academic studies. Ackermann is one of three collegiate
student-athletes from the entire state to be honored regardless of
sport or division.
The other two recipients are Gretchen Kittelberger of the
University of Maryland and Shane McCarrick of Hood College. The
honorees represent three Maryland institutions of higher learning
and differing levels of NCAA competition. Each honoree will receive
a one-time grant of $500 upon their enrollment in a post-graduate
program. The scholarships recognize three student-athletes for
superior work in the classroom and on the field.
Ackermann is in the midst of her fourth season on the SU women's
lacrosse team under the direction of Coach Jim
Nestor. The Sea Gulls are currently ranked No. 1 in the
country and hold the longest winning streak in the
nation with 20 consecutive wins to begin the
season. Ackermann has started 59 of the 82 games she has
appeared in through the regular-season. She ranks second all-time
in school history for goals scored (160), assists (140) and points
(300). She only needs eight more assists and 16 points to
become the all-time leader in those respective categories. Her
first two years she played the midfield position before moving to
attack her junior season. She recently repeated as the Capital
Athletic Conference Player of the Year as she made her second
straight appearance on the All-CAC first team. She was named the SU
Female Scholar Athlete Award winner back in April.
In 2007, she helped the Sea Gulls reach the national
championship game as the maroon and gold won a school record 21
games. She was named the CAC Player of the Year and named to the
All-American first team. She was also named to the All-CAC first
team, the All-South region first team and was selected to the
Tewaaraton Trophy watch list. The Exercise Science major has a near
perfect GPA and is a member of several honor societies
including Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Epsilon Kappa and
Omicron Delta Kappa. She also earned ESPN The
Magazine/CoSIDA All-District second team academic honors and
selected to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. She also garnered first
team All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse magazine and
WomensLacrosse.com. The two-time team captain also serves as a
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) member here at SU.
To be eligible, student-athletes must possess a minimum 3.2
grade-point average in undergraduate studies, excel in a varsity
sport, participate in leadership activities beyond the playing
field and plan to further their education.
