LAS VEGAS – The Salisbury University women's basketball team faced off against Cabrini University on day two of the Las Vegas Hoopla tournament Thursday evening and came away with a 70-56 victory.
Salisbury (9-3) and Cabrini (5-6) went toe-to-toe for much of the opening quarter. Amber Onyekwere scored first for the Sea Gulls just under a minute into a game on a three-pointer assisted by Kaylyn French. With four minutes left to go, the Cavaliers went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead, but the Sea Gulls answered quickly with an 8-2 run of their own to take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.
The maroon and gold scored the first six points of the second quarter to build the lead to 20-12, but a 9-0 Cabrini run briefly handed the lead back to the Cavaliers, 22-21, with just under five minutes left in the half. The lead changed hands four more times before Cabrini closed out with a 6-0 run to lead 29-24 at the half.
The Sea Gulls came out on fire in the second half with a 13-2 run over the first 3:34 of play. Kaylee Otlowski led the charge with seven points to give Salisbury a 37-31 lead. Cabrini cut its deficit to four on a pair of Gaby Jones free throws, but it was all Salisbury again after that as the Sea Gulls capped off a strong third quarter with a 16-6 run led by Kylie Webb's seven points to build a 53-39 lead.
The Cavaliers continued to struggle to find an answer to Salisbury's offense in the fourth quarter. Each team scored 17 points over the final 10 minutes.
Onyekwere scored a team-high 17 points in the contest, while Rachel Ryan paced all Sea Gulls with 10 rebounds. It marks the third time in the past four games that Ryan has reached double-digits in rebounds.
The team returns to action after the holidays when it returns home to host Capital Athletic Conference opponent Penn State University-Harrisburg on Saturday, January 5. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
