ASTON, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team traveled to Neumann University on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 78-54 victory.
The Sea Gulls (8-2) scored the first basket of the game just 19 seconds into the first quarter on a Kaylyn French layup that sprung 10-6 run over the first five minutes. The Knights (6-4) kept the game close throughout the first quarter but Salisbury held a 16-13 lead after one.
Salisbury scored the first five points of the second quarter to open its lead up to 21-13, but Neumann answered back with six of its own to cut its deficit back to two. A Lauren Fortescue jumper at 7:45 in the second sparked a maroon and gold run that resulted in 12 straight points to push the Sea Gull lead to 33-19. The quarter ended on a 9-7 Salisbury run to bring the halftime lead to 42-26.
Salisbury kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter, opening on a 13-7 run over the first five minutes, including a basket and two assists by Dalina Julien. The final five minutes of the period was highlighted by a Jada Welbon three-pointer as the Sea Gulls closed the third leading 63-43.
Salisbury outscored the Knights by a 15-11 margin in the fourth quarter. Morgan Maturani led the charge scoring eight of her nine points in the final ten minutes.
French paved the way for the Sea Gulls, scoring a team-high 17 points and adding four rebounds. Kaylee Otlowski pulled in a team-high six rebounds, while Julien paced all Sea Gulls with four assists.
The team will return to action when it travels to Nevada to take part in the Las Vegas Hoopla Tournament. Salisbury will open against Randolph-Macon College on December 19 at 5 p.m., Eastern time.
