GWYNEDD, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team traveled north on Friday evening to take part in day one of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament, defeating Albright College, 69-48.
Salisbury (2-0) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game before Albright (0-3) went on a run of its own to take a 12-9 lead six minutes in. A jump shot by Amber Onyekwere in the final two seconds of the opening quarter cut the Lion lead to 16-15.
A layup by Lauren Fortescue with just over five minutes to play remaining in the first half sprung a 13-4 scoring run by the Sea Gulls that led to a 32-22 halftime lead.
Albright battled hard in the third quarter to try and cut into its deficit, but the Sea Gulls kept pace and continued to answer the Lions' push. A Hailey Dayton jumper with 6:18 remaining in the third cut the Salisbury lead to eight, but Jada Welbon answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to push the Sea Gull lead back to double digits.
The maroon and gold took over in the fourth quarter, outscoring its opponent 19-6 in the frame, including an 8-2 run over the final five minutes.
Welbon scored 13 points — including going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc — to lead all Sea Gulls, while Kaylee Otlowski pulled down a team-best six rebounds. Onyekwere led Salisbury with three assists.
With the win, the Sea Gulls will take on host Gwynedd Mercy University in the tournament final on Saturday afternoon. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
