Saints top women's basketball in CAC action, 62-48

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team hosted Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference play and fell to the Saints 62-48 on Wednesday night.

The Saints (11-3, 5-2 CAC) got out to an 8-0 lead with 6:20 to go before a Kelly Lewandowski timeout settled the Gulls (8-6, 4-3 CAC) and they scored 10 seconds later on a Paige Bryce reverse layup. The teams then traded baskets to bring the score to 12-4 before a Saint three pointer with 2:06 to go brought the visitors' lead to 15-4. A Marymount free throw followed immediately by a Kaylyn French bucket closed out the scoring for the quarter with Marymount up, 16-6.

French had five rebounds in the opening quarter alone and ended the day with her second-straight double-double via 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bryce was once again the Sea Gulls' top option off the bench, filling up the stat sheet with four points, three assists, three rebounds, and two blocks.

The 10-point Saint lead held up until the 6:31 mark as each side had notched four points before Marymount got a three-point play to bring the score to 23-10. Marymount worked its lead up to 17 at 35-18 before French finished a dish from Lauren Rothfeld with 17 seconds to play to end the scoring for the half.

In the first half the Gulls had made 10 field goals with Mary McDonagh getting the helper on six of them. At game's end, McDonagh had a stat line full of eights with eight points, rebounds, and assists.

The Saints were able to extend their lead by one in the third quarter as they outscored Salisbury 15-14 in the penultimate period. With 5:54 to play a lay in by French brought the score to 40-24 and cut the lead to 16 but a quick 5-0 run by the Saints stopped the Gulls' momentum. With the score at 50-30 late in the quarter, a McDonagh jumper following a heads-up play by Rothfeld on an offensive rebound closed the scoring in the quarter with Marymount up, 50-32.

Rothfeld finished the game with seven points, seven boards, and four steals.

The Sea Gulls started the last quarter on a 7-0 run that was capped by a big three-point play by French to bring Salisbury within 11 at 50-39. After the Saints responded with a two, Salisbury got back-to-back buckets from Megan Konig and McDonagh to bring Salisbury within single digits, 52-43.

Marymount went on to get a layup on the next possession with 5:30 to play and get the game's next points with a pair of free throws with 3:12 to play to bring the score to 56-43.

The Saints would go onto outscore the Gulls 6-5 down the stretch to close the game out.

Salisbury now hits the road on Saturday, January 14 for a 1 p.m., showdown against York College of Pennsylvania in CAC play.
