GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. -The Salisbury University women's basketball team traveled to Gwynedd Mercy University as a part of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament and fell to The College of New Jersey 58-45 on Friday night.
The scoring on the night opened up with a Lauren Rothfeld three pointer but it would be the last lead the Gulls got all contest.
Rothfeld had another big showing for the Gulls as she was one of two Salisbury players to crack double digits in scoring with 11 points. Rothfeld also tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven, while adding a game high four steals.
Behind Rothfeld with three steals was guard Morgan Grubb. Grubb chipped in all over the court as she also added a game high five assists with just one turnover.
At the end of the first quarter the Lions had amassed a 17-7 advantage over the Gulls, using seven second-chance points to get after Salisbury.
The Lions got their lead up to 21-7 to start the second quarter before Kaylyn French put a stop to the run with a pair of baskets.
French ended the second quarter with six of the Gulls' eight points as TCNJ increased their lead to 14, with a 29-15 at the half.
French ended the day as the team's leading scorer with 12 points alongside seven rebounds.
The early lead that TCNJ had jumped out to would be crucial to their victory. In the second half of the game the Gulls outscored the Lions, 30-29.
Rothfeld started the comeback attempt midway into the third as she rattled off six points in a row to cut into the TCNJ lead.
In the fourth quarter, Salisbury kept fighting. Mary McDonagh hit from thee thrice in a two and a half minute span to bring the Gulls within five points with around four minutes left to play.
Following a pair of TCNJ free throws made, French and Rothfeld both converted on layups to make it a one possession game at 48-45 with 3:32 left.
However the Rothfeld layup at 3:32 would stand as the Gulls last basket of the game as the Lions ended the game on a 10-0 run to close it out.
The Gulls next play on Saturday, November 19 against the host institution of the tournament Gwynedd Mercy. That game is set to tip at noon.
