Salisbury opens up season with solid victory, takes down Peace
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Salisbury
University women's basketball team hit the road to square off
against Peace College for its first game of the season, coming away
with a solid 73-63 win. The Sea Gulls, who are
participating in the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament this
weekend, open up the season with a 1-0 record for the first time in
three years.
The Sea Gulls and Pacers played a back-and-forth game through
the first half, with both teams unable to gain enough momentum to
maintain a substantial lead. Peace finished the first half leading
by just two points but the maroon and gold struck back at the start
of the second half, going on a 5-0 run to take the lead by three.
Salisbury and Peace continued to exchange jump shots and fouls
early in the second half, aggressively trying to create a scoring
cushion; ultimately, the Sea Gulls prevailed, going up by as many
as 11 points late in the game to seal the victory.
Salisbury was led by senior forward Kylie Hall
(Baltimore, Md.), who broke open scoring for the
maroon and gold in the second half; 11 of Hall's 19
points came in the second half, giving Salisbury a lead that Peace
would be unable to catch up to. Senior forward Janay
Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) and junior guard Chante' McKinney (Gaithersburg, Md.)
each contributed 13 points apiece in the win.
The Sea Gulls continue tournament play tomorrow. Game time and
opponent are TBA.
