Sea Gulls fall to Captains in first contest of 2010
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University women's basketball team hit the road and returned to the court on Saturday after a three-week hiatus to face off against Christopher Newport University, falling to the Captains, 87-62.
The Sea Gulls (5-3, 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference), whose last game was back on Dec. 12 against Goucher College, got off to a rocky start as the Captains (10-0) scored the first eight points of the contest. Undeterred, senior forward Janay Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) scored the Sea Gulls' first two points of the game off of an assist from junior guard Chante' McKinney (Gaithersburg, Md.). Johnson led the maroon and gold's scoring in the first half, netting seven points and pulling down three rebounds. The Captains continued to add on to their lead, entering halftime with a 26-point advantage. Additionally, Christopher Newport's defense held senior forward Kylie Hall (Baltimore, Md.), who leads the team with a 16.1 points per game average, to just two points in the half.
The Captains continued their scoring in the second half, led by Chelsie Schweers, who had a career night as she netted 36 points. Salisbury's leading scorer on the night was sophomore guard Glen Charlton (Landover, Md.), who scored 18 points; Johnson finished with 13 points.
Salisbury will remain on the road for its next two games, first facing off against Washington (Md.) College on Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. and then squaring off against CAC foe Gallaudet University on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. The Sea Gulls' next home contest will be on Saturday, Jan. 9, against CAC opponent Marymount (Va.)
