Basketball on the Beach Coaching Clinic continues successful track

OCEAN CITY, Md. - For the second year in a row, the Basketball on the Beach Coaches Clinic was a rousing success. The clinic, which was held inside the Ocean City Northside Recreation Center, had three noteworthy speakers present and also drew impressive attendance numbers. Salisbury University women's basketball coach and clinic organizer, Charisse Mapp, was pleased with the 40-plus attendees and the outstanding information provided by the speakers.

"Everything went extremely well," said Mapp. "The clinic really exceeded my expectations."

The most noteworthy of the three speakers was Teresa Grentz, who was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. Grentz has over 650 wins at the NCAA Division I level as well as three gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze while leading six U.S. National teams, including the 1992 Olympic team.

Also speaking at the clinic was Arundel High School head women's basketball coach Lee Rogers, who led three teams to Maryland State Championships while amassing more than 400 career wins and winning at better than an 84 percent clip. The clinic provided another speaker in Chesapeake Community College head coach Damon Nichols, who has served the last two years as an assistant at Chesapeake, helping the Skipjacks to the 2008 NJCAA Division I Region XX championship.

The clinic offered five hours of coaching education as the speakers demonstrated a number of on-court situations with the help of student volunteers from Salisbury University. The instructional periods were followed by question-and-answer sessions, allowing the attendees to gain as much knowledge as possible from some of the foremost minds in basketball coaching.

"The event would not have been the same without the support of the community, the Ocean City Recreation & Parks Department, all the coaches that came here today and our guest speakers," Mapp said. "I'm already looking forward to another great clinic next year."

The date for the 2011 Basketball on the Beach Coaches Clinic has not been set. But with the response of the clinic's first two installments, plans are underway to make next year's event just as successful.
