Slow start hurts Salisbury in loss to No. 25 Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team dropped a 85-45 decision to No. 25
University of Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference
match on Wednesday night before a crowd of 241.
Salisbury (4-15, 4-6 CAC) was led by junior forward Kylie
Hall, who registered a team-high 16 points and five
rebounds. The Sea Gulls were paced by freshman guard Glen
Charlton (nine points) and junior forward Janay
Johnson (eight points, eight rebounds). Sophomore forward
Kelsey Netter had two steals in the loss.
The Sea Gulls took their only lead of the game, 2-0, when Hall made a lay-up at the 19:04 mark. Mary Washington would immediately respond as the Eagles used a 15-3 run over the next four minutes to take a commanding 10-point lead, 15-5. The lead would remain unchanged until late in the first half when UMW scored nine consecutive points to up its lead to 20 points, 40-20. SU would go into halftime trailing UMW, 42-23. SU shot 30 percent from the field in the first half.
SU would catch a fire of its own with a 13-2 run midway through the second half as the Sea Gulls cut into the UMW lead.
Mary Washington (15-5, 7-3 CAC) had four players notch
double-digit point totals. UMW was led by McRae (four rebounds),
who poured on a game-high 24 points. Ashton Mitchell (15
points, five assists), Katie Wimmer (14 points, two steals) and
Ashley Reed (10 points) paced the Eagles. For the game, UMW was
13-for-17 (77 percent) from the free-throw line .
SU will look to get back in the win column when it will host
CAC foe St. Mary's (Md.) College on Monday, February 2, at 6 p.m.
The Sea Gulls posted a 67-60 victory over the Seahawks on January
