NEW YORK - The Salisbury University women's basketball team found itself in another close game on the second day of the New York University Women's Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls and College of St. Elizabeth played a close first half before the Eagles took a halftime lead and didn't look back as they won 57-50 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
Salisbury (0-11) led for nearly 10 minutes in the first half as the maroon and gold broke open a 12-12 tie with a 6-0 run. Freshman Glen Charlton scored four of her 12 points during the two-minute stretch while junior forward Kylie Hall (12 points, 16 rebounds) added two points. SU's lead later grew to seven, 21-14, after a lay-up by junior forward Janay Johnson (16 points, eight rebounds). St. Elizabeth (8-7) responded and regained the lead in the final minutes of the half. Salisbury tied the game for a fourth time in the opening frame when Johnson made a lay-up at the 1:44 mark. The Eagles closed out the half on a 6-0 run, behind four points from the free-throw line, to take a 35-29 advantage into the break.
The Sea Gulls kept the Eagle lead under 10 for the entire second half and got as close as six points, 56-50, with three minutes left thanks to two free throws made by Hall.
A bright spot for the Sea Gulls was the massive advantage the maroon and gold controlled in the rebound game as SU outrebounded St. Elizabeth, 47-27. Hall's 16 rebounds is a new career-high. Hall's double-double is her second of the season. She also added three steals and three assists to pace the Gulls.
Johnson was named to the all-tournament team for the Sea Gulls as she scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in two games at the NYU Classic.
The Eagles had four player reach double figures led by Jessica Dixon's 16 points. Maesoon Deeb recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win. In the second NYU Classic game on Sunday the host NYU, ranked No. 12 in the nation, defeated Brockport State 77-51.
Salisbury turns its attention back to the Capital Athletic Conference for the remainder of the season as the Sea Gulls will next hit the road to take on St. Mary's (Md.) College (2-6, 1-1 CAC) on Wednesday, January 7, at 6 p.m.
