Seven-game win streak snapped by Pioneers

WAYNE, N.J - Senior Jessica Mills and junior Meghan Phillips each notched 16 points Wednesday evening, but it wasn't enough, as the Sea Gulls fell to William Paterson University, 69-60, at the Pioneers' Rec Center to snap SU's seven-game win streak.

Salisbury (7-2) trailed William Paterson (10-2) by as many as 10 points in the first half before the Sea Gulls went on a 15-9 run over the final nine minutes to cut into the Pioneer lead. SU trailed at the half, 29-25.

The Sea Gulls held the Pioneers to 29 percent shooting in the first half and out rebounded William Paterson, 28-21. Despite the inside presence and stout defense the Sea Gulls turned the ball over 16 times which the Pioneers took advantage of as they led at the break.

The turnover bug continued to plague the Sea Gulls in the second half as they turned it over 11 more times which lead to 19 Pioneer points.

William Paterson built a 17-point lead in the second half, its largest of the night, as the Pioneers snapped the Salisbury win streak.

WPU had four players reach double figures in scoring led by senior Luci Custis, who scored 16 points and dished out five assists and made six steals. This is the eighth straight victory for the Pioneers.

Mills pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and senior Jenna Peters added 10 points.

The Sea Gulls return to action January 5 and 6 as they take part in the Lady Monarch Classic hosted by Kings College (Pa.). Salisbury is set to play Keystone on Friday, January 5 at 6 p.m.
