Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team fell in the championship game of the Lady
Monarch Classic, 78-56, Saturday afternoon to King's College to
finish the tournament in second place.
Salisbury (8-3) got down early to King's as the Lady Monarchs built
an 11-point advantage just six-minutes into the game. The Sea Gulls
cut the lead to eight with just over 10 minutes remaining in the
half but King's (7-5) went on a 22-6 run to take a 43-19 lead into
the break.
Senior Jessica Mills was held to two first-half points and finished
the game with a season-low nine points. SU leading scorer Meghan
Phillips scored all of her five points in the first half.
The Sea Gulls outscored the Lady Monarchs 37-35 in the second
half.
Catherine Mills and Meghan Klug pulled down a team-high seven
boards apiece, while Shaniece Roseborough, Katie McFarland and
Phillips each dished out two assists.
King's was led by the duo of Kaityln Fiorino and Jenna Palumbo
who scored 22 and 21 points each, respectively.
As a team, the Sea Gulls shot 29 percent from the field while
the Lady Monarchs shot 43 percent.
The Sea Gulls advanced to Saturday's championship game after
they defeated Keystone College, 87-53, on Friday evening. Three Sea
Gulls scored in double-figures as Victoria Lawson, Brianna Simpson
and Jenna Peters scored 14, 12 and 11 points each, respectively.
Klug, who was named to the all-tournament team, was a force in the
paint as she grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Sea Gulls will return to action on Monday, January 8, as
they host The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m. at the Maggs Center.
