Sea Gulls fall in first round of Subway Invitational to Scots
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University women's basketball team dropped its season opener, 71-62, to Maryville College (Tenn.) on Friday evening in the opening round of the Subway Invitational hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Sea Gulls (0-1) took a 30-27 lead into halftime but were outscored 44-32 in the second frame, highlighted by a 12-0 run late in the half, as the Scots (1-0) grinded out the win.
Salisbury was led by senior Jessica Mills who shot 7-16 from the floor for a team-high 16 points. Freshman Janay Johnson added nine points while junior Marissa Manzo pulled down a team high nine rebounds.
The Sea Gulls had 28 turnovers which converted to 32 Maryville points, 19 in the second half, while Salisbury only managed 12 points off turnovers.
The Salisbury bench outscored the Maryville bench 27-23 and held the advantage in points in the paint, 24-16.
Salisbury will play St. Olaf College (Minn.) in the consolation game of the Subway Invitational at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 18 at the Batten Center.
