Campbell named inaugural CAC Male Athlete of the Year

YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced the inaugural recipients of its Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards on Tuesday, and Salisbury University men's track & field senior Luke Campbell was named the leagues' first-ever Men's Athlete of the Year by the CAC athletic directors for the 2015-16 season.

The Male Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the CAC student-athlete who garnered superior athletic recognition and achievement, either individually or in conjunction with his team.

Campbell closed out his decorated career in maroon and gold with a senior season that included four more national championships and seven CAC championships, along with being named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association NCAA Division III Men's Track Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Mideast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, and the CAC Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

During the indoor campaign, Campbell tallied national titles in the 60-meter hurdles and as the anchor leg of the Gulls' 4x400-meter relay team, before taking the championships in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles for the outdoor season. This year's total gave him 11 total championships for his career between the indoor and outdoor seasons, giving Campbell the most individual titles in NCAA Division III men's history.

In the CAC title meets this season, Campbell tallied the indoor championships for the 60-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash, and 4x400-meter relay. He followed that in the outdoor season with titles in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles and the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. With the outdoor CAC Athlete of the Year award this year, it marks three-straight seasons that Campbell has garnered the honor, while he has won five total Athlete of the Year awards, after including the indoor awards.

In all, he has garnered 26 All-CAC awards, including 24 on the first team, over his career. This season, Campbell collected seven first-team All-CAC honors between the two seasons.
