INDIANAPOLIS – The Salisbury University track & field teams will have five individuals making the trip to Grinnell, Iowa this weekend for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, as the invitations were announced on Monday.
Senior Luke Campbell will compete in the 60-meter hurdles and the men's 4x400-meter relay with junior Jerel Madison and sophomores Zach Schmelz and Eric Halton, while junior Meghan McGowan will compete in the women's high jump.
For Campbell, this will be his fourth trip to the indoor championships, having won the last two national titles in the 60-meter hurdles. He's also been an All-American in each of his three years in the event. Campbell enters the event seeded third, with his top time this year a 7.98-second run which came at the Capital Athletic Conference championships.
This will mark the first indoor championship meet for Campbell running a second event, competing in the 4x400 relay where he, Madison, Schmelz, and Halton are seeded ninth of 12 teams invited. The quartet's seed time is 3:18.93, which the group ran at the George Mason Last Chance Meet on February 28.
This event will mark the first ever Salisbury relay team to qualify for the indoor championships, though all four of the runners are familiar with the championship atmosphere with each claiming All-American honors last year at the outdoor championships. Schmelz earned the accolade in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay last year during the outdoor season, while Madison was part of the 4x100 team and Halton was on the 4x400 team.
McGowan made a late-season push to make a qualifying mark in the high jump. She needed to put together a season-best effort this past weekend at the ECAC championships, and she did just that, clearing 5' 6.5" to earn her way to the championships. An All-American last season at the indoor championships, McGowan enters this year seeded tied for 11th out of 17 jumpers.
The men will compete in preliminary events on Friday, March 11. Campbell's preliminary in the hurdles will be 3:10 p.m., eastern time, while the 4x400 prelim will take place at 7:50 p.m., eastern time.
McGowan's high jump final will take place on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 11 a.m., eastern time, with the finals for the hurdles (3:05 p.m., ET) and 4x400 relay (6 p.m., ET), happening later that day.
